Norton Security provides very good anti-malware protection, as do several of the "free" anti-virus programs, but with a convenient, easy-to-use interface and good support, reasons way I prefer it over the free products. It's ability to work using a consistent interface on different types of devices also makes life easier in today's multi-device households.
Norton can occassionally be a bit over-aggressive, but in a dangerous cyberworld that probably is better than the alternative. Most of what it does, it does in the background, with discreet notifications and infrequent requirements for reboots. The product claims to do some performance "tune-ups", though it's not clear that these go much beyond beyond purging temporary files. Its other non-security tools are largely available elsewhere in Windows, but it is convenient to be able access them from the uncluttered Norton platform.
you get a card shipped with all you need to get going. just go the http link on the card and five minutes later you're done. during setup one of the first screens looks like a bunch of legalese stuff but for me it matters. my only issue with that section had to do with privacy concerns. i do not want anyone to have access to my personal data regardless. so do be alert during the very first part of the install. you do NOT have to accept that particular 'service' to get full functionality from the product.
once done with the installation process you can easily tweak the settings to do what you want or disable other functions you don't want running. at the very end to run the 'live update' option for the most recent code updates. you can find that just by right clicking on the norton icon in the taskbar, choose 'run liveupdate.' after that the software runs updates automatically in the background. even for those not familiar with AVS products this one is designed in a simple straight forward manner so anyone can use it.
so all said for the money and the functionality you do get a a good value out of norton. just wish they wouldn't try make up for the lower price point by harvesting user data. again those who don't pass on that part during setup? a bit sneaky IMHO guessing most end users wouldn't read that bit. i say all this as someone who has been a victim of identity theft and it is truly horrible. it's sad but you just can't be too safe these days, no matter who is asking for access at the other end.
i would recommend this product other than the one caveat mentioned to keep in mind.
I originally started out with Norton Internet Security and later transitioned to Norton 360 and with the streamlining of the product selection by Symantec (parent company), I am now using Norton Security. I have been both an end user as well as a marketer of this software while working in the retail environment for 10 years. Whenever I had a customer come in requesting assistance with removal of "malware" or "viruses/trojan/etc" on their computer, young or old, novice or expert, I always recommended this product first.
Hands down this is the most reliable and most effective computing software package to not only prevent malware from both being downloaded as well as to prevent install into any of your applications, but it also has built in tools in the primary user interface to automate the optimization of your computer's system performance. Add to this the option for online data backup to store your precious family photos, confidential financial and legal documents, home movies and much much more, and what you end up with is a total protection package.
The most common complaint I have always received when recommending this product whether it be the Norton 360 version or the current Norton Security Deluxe is that "It is too expensive" or "I heard that it will slow down my computer too much" or even "I saw in Consumer Reports that X branded free software is the highest rated". Well, here's the actual facts to each of these retorts:
1. Norton 360/Norton Security Deluxe sells for $20 every single Black Friday, making it cheaper than 95% of all comparable security software on the market.
2. What will slow your computer more? Having the security software keeping your computer clean and optimized, or getting infected/bogged down by unneccessary temporary files (internet temp files, windows user and system error logs, old install packages, old update files)?
3. Consumer Reports and by the same token, almost every review agency online and in print almost always makes a comparison without taking into consideration total value, meaning the free software always wins the competition. Is the free software effective? Maybe. Maybe not. Is it on the same level of capability as the subscription-based security/system optimization software? Absolutely not by an astronomical margin! Comparing free security/system optimization software to the subscription-based software is like comparing a bi-plane with a prop to a 747 jumbo jet. Sure, both can technically get you to where you're going, but the reliability and efficiency between the two is so radically different as to make the comparison invalid.
In the end, you only need to make one decision to determine if this software is for you. Do you plan on keeping your computer for more than 3 months? If your answer is yes, get this software. If not, go ahead and use the free software provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) with the cautionary warning not to keep anything on the computer you would be upset to lose.
For reference purposes, I have inserted the product link for the version of Norton software that this product replaces/upgrades as of Symantec streamlining their product offerings.
